The theme for this year’s Blog for Choice Day on the 35th anniversary of Roe vs Wade is directly linked to the next American Presidential election, and so is not so relevant to an Australian blog, but here goes anyway - Why it’s important to vote pro-choice.
I wrote about this topic just the other day, so this won’t be a long post.. but, why is it important to vote pro-choice?
Because you might need an abortion one day, and even if you think you’d never have an abortion yourself, you’d want the option there for your sister, girlfriend, daughter, or best friend if they ever needed one.
Maybe, you’re still not convinced. Maybe right now you find it difficult to envision anyone in your circle of loved ones having an abortion but I’d suggest two things. Firstly, if one in three women are having abortions then the strongest chance is there that someone in your circle has had (or will have) an abortion, they just haven’t talked about it with you… and the second thing. When I worked as a pregnancy counsellor I spoke to hundreds of women and I can’t tell you how many times I heard “I’ve never believed in abortion before, I never thought I’d ever have one, but I just never thought this would happen to me” and “I’m against abortion, but this is different, we really need this abortion, we still think it’s wrong, but we just can’t see any other option, we can’t have this baby and we could never go through adoption”.
So what I’m saying is life is complicated, you just never know. By all means rule out the choice for yourself but don’t rule it out for other women. You don’t know what shit could happen and you don’t know what it feels like when that shit happens unless you’re there living that situation. Pro-choice is not compulsory abortion, it’s choice. And take it from me, there were some cases I saw, so desperate that you’d think - I defy any anti-choicer to be here with this girl/woman and listen to this story and tell her that she can’t have an abortion. Could they look at this young girl without a mother, continually raped by her father, who was now pregnant before she’d even experienced her first period, and tell her that she wasn’t entitled to finally have some say over her own body?
Vote in every political election with choice in mind.
