Lauca and her friend ‘doing’ craft while my friend and I talk feminism. As per craft requirements a fairly substantial mess was made. But this was at our friends’ place, a magical old Russian house where tempers are not so easily frayed by crafty mess.
We end up with little snippets of paper all over the family room. Regularly. And more recently, needles and clipped off strands of wool.
Mine are now old enough to clean up afterwards. As in, we used to ask them to clean up, and get them to do it, but the reality was that we did most of it. Now they do.
I don’t know, blue milk, from where I’m standing (or running!!) as mum to a veeeeeery active 15mth old who also really loves one-on-one interaction ALL THE TIME, craft projects and a child who can play for hours by herself sounds pretty damn good, whatever the messy consequences!!! I can only hope that my little boy too develops such a passion… (or is it a case of be careful what you wish for?).
I bought the kid some stickers at the supermarket today (he’d been eyeing off froot loops and cocopops for the first time, and investigating all the branded crap that passes for yoghurt, I practically pushed him to buy stickers instead) now he’s got them on his face, and he’s a king, and the rest are going onto the roof of the dolls’ house.
Despite the fact that I gave it to him for Christmas, I still think it’s my doll’s house. I had twinges, then I had to concede that the foamy ladybird stickers were a cheery addition, so I’m letting them go.
Our carpet has playdough in it. I’m not really sure what to do about that.
I got the playdough out of the carpet, but it left the colour behind. Not to worry, it matches the drawings on the walls, the chalk on the cupboards and the thousands of saved easter egg wrappers her father gave her to cut into bit, and are now everywhere.
We mostly go for drawings. sometimes I cut out BIG PICTURES for collages – they are more likely not to end up stuck to my feet.
and surprisingly, wood glue and matchstick ‘castles’ on pieces of board wasnt that messy at all. she was so busy concentrating that she was really careful.
Oh…the mess gets to me sometimes.
I’m just grateful that the carpet that’s got the playdough in it belongs to us (it’s an overlocked remnant we bought for the loungeroom) and not the landlord’s. I’m also pleased to report that the foamy stickers peel off.
I’m less excited about the fact that our carpet is very dark, almost black, and shows every crumb in contrast. And every grey hair that falls out of my head.
We do lots of chalk drawing on the outside walls and on the paving under the carport. He can go nuts with it, and any associated mess remains outside and gets washed away when it rains (which it is, right now, I’m very excited).
glitter..wait for the obsession with glitter
