My sister took these gorgeous photos. These baby photos might go on a little. But oh god, I’m never going to have another nearly-5 week old baby of my own, this is it. And I’m hopelessly smitten with the little tike.

Feminism, motherhood and compromise

In a strange land has responded to my 10 questions on feminist motherhood. I’ve followed her blog for quite some time and she is a deeply thoughtful parent and political thinker. The clear theme to emerge in her response to my 10 questions is ‘compromise’, and how she is coming to terms with this perhaps [...]

In celebration of the new Double-Daring Book for Girls (by Andrea J. Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz), I have been sent a copy for the book launch. This book, like the first book, is full of interesting facts, activities, games, and also a good range of stories about bold, adventurous women through history and their various pursuits. The most exciting thing I did today was go to the local chemist with a kindergartener and an infant to have infant weighed.. I don’t know, it was an outing and I was curious, and maybe this baby will be disappointed otherwise when he one day compares his baby diary to that of his sister’s [...]

This name bizzo, the patriarchy was defeated, my partner is reconciled to it (cookie for him), his family not so much. We chose a Scandinavian name for our son in the end and my partner’s name is his middle name instead. And I can’t think of a nickname for the baby for use on this blog; I find his [...]

There is an interesting discussion happening in the comments thread over at this post on Bitch PhD about Linda Hirshman’s ‘Get to Work’ book from a few years ago. Hirshman, you might recall caused quite a stir for mothers when she urged stay-at-home mothers to return to the workplace for the sake of feminist action, [...]

Image credit: here. Matthew Johns makes the wrong apology on The Footy Show. Guess who really knows how that feels? This week Australian current affairs program, Four Corners presented a devastating program on rugby league’s problem with sexual violence against women. Among the many incidents the program had at its disposal (spoilt for choice) to use in exploring this [...]
Happy Mothers Day from the government

The Australian federal government has finally ponied up to a paid parental leave scheme. Eighteen weeks at the minimum wage*, not a bad start. There will be plenty of moans from the ‘children as lifestyle choice’ brigade and they’ll be extra snarky because it is primarily women who raise infants and thus who will be using this scheme. [...]
