For me a really good playdate starts during the morning and doesn’t end until long after dinner. There is a rough patch two-thirds of the way through where you and the other mother think about throwing in the towel and calling it a day because the kids are getting tired and hungry and difficult, but if you’re the right pair of friends you push through together until the children are bathed and fed and quiet again and then you sit and laugh over a glass of wine. The best conversation of the entire day will happen at this moment. Sometimes it will be the best conversation you have had in weeks.
I had two such playdates this week. It is the school holidays. Perfect.


that is similar to my favorite part of children’s parties, after some parents have stuck around to help clean up, baths and some healthy food have been had (look who is dreaming) and a few quiet ones get upended.
