It is interesting though, because I remember how often boys at school tried to imply that Duran Duran members were gay because of the new romantic aesthetic, I think that while the aesthetic can be understood for what it was, even at the time it still attracted homophobic reactions.
Yeah, you’re probably right Melissa, about there always being homophobic reactions, but I do think there was also a different version of masculinity in mainstream pop music back in the 80s.
Those pants were so tight there was no doubting their masculinity, or use of socks perhaps…
