A male friend and I hugged and he tells me that afterwards my two year old son walked up to him quite cheerfully and said “Don’t touch my mother”.

Whoa.
Oh dear.
Out of all the posts I’ve read in my reader today. This one made me gasp. Amazing what they come out with.
Made me laugh, because it’s similar to something that happened with my daughter, when she was three, many years ago.
She saw my husband and I hugging, pushed her way in between us and demanded, “Get your hands off her! I’m the one that really loves her!”
BTW, frequent reader, but first comment. Enjoy your writing.
Huh. Mine do that, sort of – “That’s MY mama!” – but since they have also been known to warn complete strangers and innocent bystanders off their cupcakes, toys, and even our apartment, I’ve never thought anything of it. Possibly I am undervaluing myself.
My kids used to do it to each other. The younger one especially liked to push her brother away when she was breastfeeding. If he came around the other side for a cuddle she would pull off and lean over and push him away. When she could talk enough she’d say “My Mummy”. She was very serious about it too, and there were often two children in tears.
My almost 15 year old son and 5 year old daughter have regular arguments about ‘whose mummy’ I actually am. Son does it to stir up Daughter. Daughter wants me all to herself.
