I really enjoyed the last article with the five reasons. I thought they would be 5 good reasons that people don’t identify as feminists, and I was prepared to be angry, but it actually just reinforced how bullshit I’m-not-a-feminist-but is. ahhhhhh rage soothed.

It still irritates me no end that women, especially white educated middle class heterosexual women who have benefited so much from feminism, want to distance themselves so quickly from it. I can’t recall at the moment, the name of the woman who said this; (as soon as I remember I will let you know…) it goes something like ” Feminism didn’t start any wars…it supported women’s shelters and victims of sexual assault… so when someone says they are not feminist, I wonder, what have you got against it?”

I did notice that tag-line for Jessica Valenti and raised an eyebrow. Why do feminist spokespeople have to be funny? MLK: Civil RIghts with Fun! Nelson Mandela: Laugh Your Way Out of Apartheid!

Great to see it being unpacked in those pieces.

I am similarly disappointed when Marissa Mayer denounced being a feminist but am now wondering how much the actual label means if you do substantively believe and promote the tenets.

I am happy with the label feminist. It’s a belief-system, not a bunch of prescriptive practices (or anti-practices!)
