Yes to all of this over at projectophile. I love modernist architecture (and mid-century, particularly), with all my heart and it is absolutely not child-friendly. And for anyone wanting to contemplate this further.. here is a tumblr site with lots of photos of families looking miserable about their truly glorious homes. (The site includes bonus Montessori jokes – gosh, we’re predictable types).

I’m all about embracing my predictability at the moment. I’m finding it’s a whole lot easier.
They don’t look that unhappy ; )
Looking at those rock structures and ponds and so forth in the living room made me imagine just how many colonys of mice and lizards and frogs we would have living there in just a couple of days as the cats did their own little catch and release project for their own enjoyment. Would certainly make things interesting. I never realised what death traps modernist buildings where. I’m surprised anyone ever survived a party at one!
Ahaha, the floating stairs! We’ve been looking at apartments lately (who am I kidding, I’m always looking) and one of the few I found that would suit turned out to have floating stairs. Total dealbreaker, which sucked because the rest of the place was super nice – and affordable! – but, no way in hell am I trying to live with that kind of regular anxiety and panic.
(It doesn’t help that floating stairs trigger my own absolutely paralyzing fear of heights. I’d be liable to get halfway up them and freeze, requiring rescue from the fire department.)
I’m holding this thread responsible for last night’s nightmare in which I lost my kids in a large house full of reflection ponds!
