You see photos of celebrities doing everything; every intimate aspect of their lives is documented and pondered, but this is not something you see everyday. A celebrity breastfeeding; in this case Maggie Gyllenhaal (of the film Secretary). I don’t know if that is because celebrities don’t usually breastfeed, or don’t breastfeed in public, or if the paparazzi have some weird code of ethics about photographing breastfeeding that doesn’t extend to any other part of a celebrity’s life.
I saw this photo stimulated a bit of insane discussion on celebrity blogs about how disgusting it is for a celebrity to be doing that in public. You know, forcing us to watch them feeding a baby because god knows none of us has the power to avert our gaze from a CELEBRITY. It was a discussion completely lacking in self-awareness.
1. Celebrities show their breasts in public all the time.
2. This celebrity is breastfeeding, not showing you her breasts.
3. This photo wasn’t posed by the celebrity, it was taken by paparazzi, the celebrity isn’t deliberately showing you anything.
4. Breastfeeding is not a disgusting sight.
So here… shock yourself some more. Ms Gyllenhaal is breastfeeding that baby again.
As if I needed to be any more in love with Maggie after her performance in Secretary. I am now completely smitten. I know she is likely not breasfeeding in public to make a big statement; she is simply feeding her baby. Still, she IS making a statement, and I am grateful to her for it. These photos are gorgeous.
Yes, I agree, it is a very welcome statement she is making as a woman in the public eye.
Go Ms. Gyllenhaal!

Love her, love her breastfeeding in public even more! We need to see this more often, that’s why I always openly but discreetly nursed my baby, then toddler, in public.
I don’t nurse in public any longer, but my son still nurses at 4 years old. I believe in child-let weaning, and here you go. Anyone who has a problem with it, please get educated about the many benefits or just get over it.

[…] Celebrity breastmilk for the long haul. I hear you, Mayim Bialik; she is writing here in kveller about whether to wean her toddler son or not: I never ever believed that I would be nursing a child over the age of 3. But now that I am, I believe when he is done, he will be done. I believe that he will not need to nurse before he walks down the aisle to greet his bride under the chuppah, and I believe that nursing is natural and beautiful and wonderful. I believe in being conscious of where I nurse my toddler and I also believe that there is nothing wrong with nursing Fred. […]
[…] Interesting to see how many more positive comments there are on that celebrity news site than negative ones in response to this quote from actor, Selma Blair. Not so long ago Salma Hayek was breastfeeding her baby and getting absolutely slammed for it in the comments on celebrity news sites. Her baby was a little older at the time, thirteen months old, whereas Selma Blair’s baby is eight months old, but she wasn’t saying anything as assertive about it as Selma is saying here in this quote. Are the breastfeeding in public times changing? Because, being outraged about celebrities breastfeeding in public – not enough irony in the world to cover that. […]
