For all of those who find themselves here in search of “sexy breastfeeding”, I got a little something for ya.
(Thank you rose for telling me about this clip, my life would not have been complete without it).
you’re too good. I remember hearing an interview years ago with a man whos breasts produced copious quantities of milk and a friend has been producing milk since the age of 14. My husband and i talked about the possibilities of it when i was pregnant but i decided it was an area that i felt to much ‘ownership’; an interesting feminist discussion.
I was shocked at myself for being jarred by the images. The concept is lovely, and I would wholeheartedly support men in taking up breastfeeding, but actually seeing it in action was a jolt. Just goes to show how ingrained we can be.
I don’t think it makes you ingrained, el burro. Our minds are pretty much designed to wave big red flags when we see something unusual. Men breastfeeding is definitely something unusual, there isn’t necessarily a value judgement in it.
And I am very disappointed that I was so completely oblivious of this. I had no idea I had the possibility of palming off breastfeeding. What a missed opportunity!
Can we talk about the chic in the tub? Do we know who she is and why she was in a tub for her interview because it undermined the concept for me. It’s a cute short, but it came across as a mockumentary short, rather then as a documentary short mostly because of the tub lady. Or have I been scammed and IS this a mockumentary?
You had me at ‘sexy breastfeeding’ searches – I get those too! I wonder if its the same 40 people, all with just really bad memories…
Grin grin grin … love it. I have always maintained that if I had the power I would have men grow breasts while women grow the baby. After the birth it would the task of both men and women to feed the new born child. What a different world it would be.
I like the way this clip challenges the stereotypes about sex and gender roles. Fathers desire to nurture baby may be just a version of ‘feminine masculinity’ – and if men have the equipment to do it, then why not share the task and benefit from the bonding. Walkerdine (1990) said it’s ‘…much harder to stand against the tide and display behaviours traditionally associated with the opposite sex, when all our own self-development and the societal apparatuses and discourses have been driving us toward the constrction of a gender-appropriate identity, and behaviours that delineate this’
serahrose: It is mockumentary, I’m afraid. It won “Best Comedy” at the St Kilda film festival.
Of course men’s nipples are suckle-able, and some drugs or medical conditions can cause them to produce a small amount of milk (google “galactorrhoea/galactorrhea”), but there has _never_ been a reliable source showing a healthy bioman to bring in a full milk supply.
The bathtub scene ruined it for me, too. Just why?
Have you seen the Dadlabs breast pumping video?
And then there’s this Colbert segment.
