Oh, I love these! Thanks for pointing them out.
oh, brilliant!
Wow, thanks for posting the link. I loved these.
Some of the comments are weird though… like completely, 100% missing the point.
Oh wow. Wow.
I fucking love these!
Thanks for posting Blue Milk 🙂
I have trouble with this series for a variety of reasons but the one that really gets my goat? Red Riding Hood being fat and seemingly stuffing herself with food. What is with that? Are we still falling prey to the mindless stereotype that all fat people eat themselves stupid on “junk” food all the time? I find that attitude patronising at best…
bri – glad you pointed out little red riding hood because I hadn’t picked up on the possible story being told there. An interesting, and frequently stupid discussion has started around this piece on the site for anyone interested. The artist herself says the piece is about America’s consumption of junk food, which means there is likely some (overt) subtext there about fat = bad eating.
I was a bit concerned about the Jasmine one too. But really like the one I used in this post.
what disturbed me were all the comments saying how ‘funny’ they were.
[…] Happily ever after […]
Some of these were really awesome. Riding Hood and Jasmine are pretty damn problematic, though, as are the artist’s response to criticism on Red Riding Hood: “Now Now kids…relax..its just my personal comment on today’s fast food society. Art or not if it makes you think and dialogue then I’m happy.”
AND the comment below that, laughing that the commenter who objected to the image “was probably fat” stood unchallenged. That rather sours my enjoyment of the rest of the series.
Sorry. I’m having one of those news-exhaustion days, when everything you read is soaked in misogyny and you just want to cry.
