Should you ever want to dismantle what little domestic equality you may have otherwise carved out for yourself with your partner then I recommend having a baby with them. New book announcement:
When Couples Become Parents: The Creation of Gender in the Transition to Parenthood by Bonnie Fox (University of Toronto Press).
Based on interviews with 40 women and their male partners, the book explores a variety of ways in which gender divisions and inequalities are created in the transition to parenthood — and sometimes challenged. It pays special attention to the effects of social class, the costs of privatized responsibility for babies, and the impact of social support. In looking at how couples negotiate their new responsibility, Fox finds some interesting interpersonal dynamics within couples.
