Remember all the times I wrote here about how wet it was this summer? Well, this is what happened with that.
Catastrophic floods is actually what happened, and it has not been nearly so cute as this image of the dinosaurs at the Museum going under water suggests. (That image is courtesy of my friend – more photos of this area of town going under here).
Now, here is a little quiz for you. All the grocery shops ran out of four items during the panic buying that happened once this city realised that the flood crisis would prevent new supplies coming in whether or not your suburb was actually under water. When everyone in the suburbs, like ours, that aren’t affected by the flood waters go panic purchasing at the supermarket what four things do they all buy?

We are a simple folk, apparently.
P.S. I said something about Anna Bligh here, too, in case you are remotely interested.
That looks terrible I hope that you and your family are safe.
For some reason I thought you were somewhere in victoria.
I somehow never realised you were local. Neat! I’m on the south side of Brissy and my partner also works in the CBD. She couldn’t get sent home fast enough for my tastes. Our house is situated very safely for these kinds of ordeals, I hope yours is as well.
I grew up in Pennsylvania in the US, and the buying trends and such were very similar for blizzards there. Canned food and TP went the fastest, because noone wanted to be hungry or covered in poo. ><
I too was quite sure you lived in Melbourne 🙂 Glad to hear you’re all well xx
I only guessed 3 outta 4.
I thought Melbourne too. I think it’s the black outfits…
It looks horrific in QLD o the telly. I hope you and yours are holding up ok, and managed to stock up on the loo rolls.
I had no idea where in Australia you lived, and my geography is sketchy at best, but I was on here yesterday trying to find out if you were near the floods and hoping you were all safe and sound and dry.
Glad you are. (I would never have guessed baked beans.)
Am glad to hear you are OK. The news we are seeing looks horrific and it has been evident at my work (especially while doing overtime with the rain pounding) just how much of QLD is affected.
I have been really impressed with Anna Bligh too. As well as seeming really competent, she is showing great warmth. And just seems, well real.
Hope you’re all set for toilet paper and baked beans.
I think here it’s tuna instead of baked beans, but I hope you’re stocked up with whatever you need and your house stays dry!
I would have also guessed batteries and disposable diapers. Whenever I hear about disasters here in the U.S. those seem to be hot commodities. Hope you and your family are safe!
Oh God. You’re going to turn the blog all survivalist now aren’t you?
(Glad you’re ok, even if you have to do without milk, baked beans, toilet paper and bread)
The third kind of necessitates the fourth.
But cold baked beans in a power cut – yuck! An added griminess to a time of horror.
Baked beans? I’d understand it if you could have, say, baked beans on toast, but that requires that pesky little thing known as power, which tends to get knocked out in these types of situations.
I’m suprised ya’ll don’t run out of water!
Take care of yourself – and stay safe with those little ones. I hope they don’t drive you batshit crazy being cooped up in the house.
Yes, we are without power but we do have gas, so our baked beans will be warmed at least. We got our BBQ out on the street last night and our neighbours all cooked up the defrosted freezer meat. We had water views last night… Our street Narrowly missed out on being flooded, just came up about half-metre. Have gotten to know all our neighbours.
We feel very lucky, a lot of friends and acquaintances through daycare will have been quite affected. Ice also in short supply. Glad to hear you aren’t flooded bm.

Thanks PJ and Jamie for letting me know how you are holding up in this flood.
PJ, knowing where you guys live I had wondered/worried about you some.
Everyone else – I think Melbourne is more suited to me. I should move.
I have always assumed you are in Melbourne. Mostly because you are way cooler than me, and everyone knows that Melbourne people are cool. At least that’s what Sydney people (secretly?) think.
we should all move…
Glad to hear you guys are all right, and mostly dry.
Have been seeing this on the news. Sounds like you are okay, but I imagine more damage will be revealed as things dry out. Hang in there.
Count me as another person who assumed Melbourne, for some reason… Which means that I haven’t been worrying about you and yours these last few days. But I *have* been worrying about my brother and his wife. Their area has been cut off a few times, but not flooded, and they themselves live towards the top end of a suburb called [redacted] Rise.
I’m very glad to hear that you are all fine, if crowded.
I too am glad you’re okay. But beans? Sure, you can eat ’em cold when the power goes out, but my kids would be making fart jokes for the duration of the emergency. Which, come to think about it, might keep them happily distracted.
Take care.
Up until some recent posts that indicated you lived in Qld, I had thought you were Melbourne-based, too. You certainly seem so very Melbourne-like. If at all possible, you should definitely move! 🙂
Good to know you’re safe and sound.

I thought you lived in Canberra.
I’m a woman of national mystery!
