I like my comedy dark and defiant. Comedian Rob Delaney likes to skate about on thin ice. Very thin ice. Back and forth and back and forth. Daring it to break.. or you. Sex jokes, rape jokes, child abuse jokes .. the works. So, be warned. But he’s also really funny and he’s pro-feminist. For real.
More of Delaney here in an interview at The Good Men Project. He’s not perfect (for instance, I wish he wouldn’t say things about there being less racism and homophobia than sexism these days), but he is pulling off some amazing comedic stunts whilst also challenging misogyny, homophobia and racism. You can follow him on twitter – @robdelaney
He is very good. I’m impressed!
Hilarious! Thanks so much for sharing.
Ooh! I love stand-up (guilty pleasure most of the time..) thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for posting my video & writing what you wrote. It makes me happy to see that my standup could ever possibly lead to a positive, constructive discussion. Let me say that homophobia & racism are CERTAINLY no less evil than misogyny; it just seems to me that misogyny will ultimately take longer to uproot since women make up slightly more than half the planet’s population. I could certainly be wrong; that’s just what it looks like to me. You have a great blog and great people reading it.
Best,
Rob
Thanks Rob for the comment. Nice to see you here. Again, your comedy is incredible.
So let me just say that I adore Rob Delaney (and am giddy as all hell that he took the time to comment here). I think it’s quite the feat to say something “offensive” without been a douchebag, and he seems to pull this off well time and time again.
I also think that, in light of what you’ve written here (that thin ice metaphor is perfect), comedy at its best is an art form that can communicate something about really difficult topics in a way that more direct, logical conversation cannot. Sounds hokey, I know. But it seems like comedy has always been a fantastic medium for pointing out the logical inconsistencies that are inherent in homophobia, racism, and sexism…and then getting people to think a bit about those inconsistencies more.
Damn, now THIS solves a problem for me. Getting comedy vetted through you, Bluemilk! Thanks heaps!!!
Dear Rob Delaney, I avoid comedy because I got tired of going to events and not really finding things funny that everyone else does. Now I will definitely make an effort to check out your work.
Fantastic and refreshing. I’ve always been a Louis C.K. fan– glad to be introduced to a new, progressive comedian.
I believe that no person or group is off-limits when it comes to comedy. It’s just that doing successful comedy that involves jokes about traditionally marginalized groups is really challenging to pull off. It’s especially hard if you’re a straight, white, man. Really, there are only a few guys in the world who are smart enough to do it successfully.
Rob is one of them. I adore him.
The yoghurt line made me laugh beer up my nose. Thanks!
[…] posted a link to this on twitter, but it really deserves wider distribution. Remember when I said that comedian, Rob Delaney can pull off a rape joke? Well, I meant it like the way I kinda made a rape joke here in this post, where the joke is on […]
Thanks so much for this, blue milk. I really needed this tonight 🙂
I have a really hard time with the merit/purpose of talking about holding a kid down and having sex with them. I really wanted to like this, but ended up crazy triggered and freaked out.
My husband would be ECSTATIC if I built us a ‘fuck shed!’ =)
