What’s a story a woman could tell about herself that someone would somehow find “hilarious”, that others would find completely enraging and which she, herself, would just find plain heart-breaking?
If Holly Finn’s book, The Baby Chase is anything to go by, that story is infertility. I was sent a copy of the by-liner book for review by her publisher. It’s a very good read – a thoughtful account of her personal experiences of IVF intermixed with knowledgeable scientific detail about the modern medical fertility business. Injecting in an alley is just one of the more unusual experiences Finn has now incorporated into her life.
When the publisher for The Baby Chase sent me the e-book he promised me something “hilarious”. Curious description I thought, given how gut-wrenching I found much of Finn’s infertility story to be, and so I Googled it to see what others were saying… and that’s how I came upon an extract from the book printed on a mainstream site where people were tearing strips off Finn for her apparent ‘selfishness’. Finn is intending to be a single mother by choice and she’s had a fulfilling career.
Goddamn, infertility. Sure brings out the woman-haters and blamers.
If you’re in the mood for such a read then I recommend Finn’s book. She’s both a feminist and a captivating writer. The Baby Chase is available here for purchase and is a relatively quick (and affordable) read.
