Here I am being quoted on Mia Freedman’s post, “Why I’m a ‘bad’ feminist” at Mamamia. I think I am being labelled The Feminist Police. That’s ok, I stand by my remarks in our twitter debate. I don’t think there is anything particularly feminist about calling mothers with birth plans ‘birthzillas’, which is a little different to the way Freedman is representing our debate.
Apparently, by questioning women who choose to give birth at home despite their pregnancies being high risk (with often fatal consequences for their babies), I am somehow ‘betraying the sisterhood’.
This doesn’t mean I think Freedman isn’t a feminist, but it does mean I am starting to wonder if Mamamia is still trying to do ‘feminist motherhood’ over there. And if not, well great, one more place promoting endless ‘mummy wars’, how productive.
P.S. In truth, I do feel despondent about all this. More feminist mothers writing, but also, more of all mothers sticking together. That’s my Feminist Police message to you.
