For anyone who was miserable at school..
In its inaugural year, the prize has been won by 25-year-old Sydney artist Laura Moore, who used the traditional school photo as inspiration for a piercing self-portrait.
She says the ritual of having school photos taken is something many people remember.
“I wanted to do something that was real, that felt real – like I was being honest,” Ms Moore said.
“I wasn’t compromising – that’s why I decided to go all the way with it,” she said.
For hours on end the artist sat in front of the camera and recalled memories of her more miserable experiences at school.
Eventually the tears welled up and spilled over, and she captured her sadness in a series of still photos that have been transferred to the screen.
